Our Occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, BCBA’s, behavioral therapists and special instructors provide a welcoming, trustworthy, and caring environment that allows you and your child to feel comfortable and supported. We understand that in many cases, the environment must adapt to the needs of the child—the Sunshine Center was built with your child in mind. We will set goals for your child and in 1:1 therapy or group sessions, perform activities that will help us reach those goals.

Occupational therapy helps better enable children to carry out daily living activities through therapeutically engaging in everyday activities. Occupational therapy can help children close the gaps in their abilities and/or learn new ones. Occupational therapists often work on skills that help children coordinate their hands and eyes, such as cutting with scissors, holding and writing with a pencil, coloring, buttoning clothing and tying shoes. Your child may also work on activities to help them process and regulate sensations more effectively.
Speech and language therapy helps children learn to communicate with others. Speech therapists work to help children to improve their ability to communicate through use of play activities and social activities that encourage children to share their thoughts and listen to others. Speech therapists also help children strengthen and coordinate the muscles that they need for eating and talking.
Physical therapists work with children to improve their ability to move around their environment safely. Children may work on learning to walk, run, jump or participate in other gross motor activities. Physical therapists help children build strength and coordination in their body so that they can participate more actively in a variety of activities.
The Sunshine Center offers one-on-one therapy sessions to teach your child fundamental skills used in everyday life. The wide-range of skills include in-home tasks such as making the bed and folding laundry and outside-the-home tasks such as grocery shopping and using an ATM. Some of the skill sessions take place outside our development center.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is often an essential approach and core component of a treatment plan in helping children with Autism. Our therapists help children with autism in a one-on-one environment, focusing on encouraging positive behavior through meaningful reinforcement techniques.
Individual evaluations are completed with your child and their therapist at the center. These evaluations are the first step in determining the need for individualized therapy and how best to provide that therapy if needed. You are actively involved in the evaluation process, which typically consists of use of some testing materials, surveys, questionnaires and clinical observations of your child.
Our Board Certified Behavior Analyst completes an in-depth behavior assessment that provides information to help develop an individualized plan to work on behavior challenges that your child might be experiencing. This assessment is the first step in development of a behavior plan to improve your child's ability to demonstrate appropriate behavior.
Sometimes specialized equipment or technology is needed for your child to participate most effectively in everyday activities. For example, children with communication challenges may benefit from the use of an iPad with a specialized communication app to help them express themselves. Another child may need a walker to help them walk, or a special type of spoon that is easier to hold when eating. The Sunshine Center team of therapists will help determine the most appropriate equipment or technology to enhance your child’s ability to participate in the activities important to your child and family.
